Since 1875, the Railway has connected the mines of the Eskdale valley with the former strategic Roman port of Ravenglass. Originally built to a 3ft gauge, it was re-gauged in 1915 by famous model maker Bassett-Lowke. La’al Ratty, its local nickname, means “little railway” in olde Cumbrian dialect.
Today, the Railway is an award winning heritage visitor attraction and Lake District icon, living up to its “must do” reputation for all ages. Their heritage steam engines transport passengers from Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lake District National Park, to Dalegarth for Boot some 210ft above sea level. The seven mile journey from coast to mountain traverses the nature reserves of the Ravenglass estuary before ascending through ancient woodlands towards the foothills of England’s highest Mountains, the Scafell range. The journey takes 40 minutes each way and passes seven intermediate request stops which are perfect for walking. Cosy covered and open top carriages provide the best of comfort and views as you travel up the line. And with the introduction of a brand new 1st Class and Observation Carriages, you can upgrade and travel in style.
Excellent facilities at both ends of the line make for a truly great all weather day out. At Ravenglass you will find the Ravenglass Railway Musuem and the Turntable café. At Dalegarth for Boot station facilities include Fellbites café, gift shop with plenty of pocket money gifts and great trails and walks to explore including Stanley Ghyll waterfalls and the Eskdale Mill. The main season runs from March until October however trains do operate during November and December for Christmas.
