With so many things to do, places to see and attractions to visit here in the Lake District, it can be hard to choose! That’s why our team here at Real Lakes are always out and about exploring the BEST places to go in the Lakes.
We recently visited Rydal Mount and gardens, the historic family home of Wordsworth and what a glorious visit it was. Tucked away between Ambleside and Grasmere it’s idyllic location certainly inspires and it’s not difficult to imagine why Wordsworth chose to call the place home.
Arriving
After arriving via the 555 bus, (which is super duper easy to catch throughout the heart of the Lake District and a lovely way to sit back and enjoy the views), we took a gentle stroll up to Rydal Mount, frequently pausing to turn around and enjoy the stunning views.
Outside
Arriving at the gate the rugged beauty of the place is quite something. The wild nature of the trees, plants and shrubbery holds a wonderful elegance… and within it, the house is nestled. As we walk we explore the extensive gardens, complete with running pathways, ancient trees, flora and fauna of all kinds.
You can hear birds, feel the gentle breeze and see the lake stretching out before you.
Inside
The beauty continues as we enter the house and explore its various rooms. It’s as if it has been left untouched, perfectly preserved in all its charm. The creaking floorboards, stunning wooden beams and original furniture take you right into Wordsworth world. It is so much more than a museum, or historic house… you don’t just see that it’s real, you feel it.
Cake anyone?
Our visit ends with coffee and cake in the delightful tea room positioned just next door to the house. We settle next to a warming fire, sip our coffee and taste the most delicious tea bread I think i’ve ever had!
If you haven’t yet explored Rydal Mount and Gardens… go! It’s the perfect time of year to experience this tranquil, unique property! Plus, when you quote ‘RealLakes’ on booking, you can enjoy free entry to the 5 acre gardens with the purchase of a tea or coffee.
