Six fabulous days out this winter

The Lake District is an all year, all weather experience. Winter visits can offer beautiful snow topped fells and landscapes that the trees usually hide from summer visitors. Add in a touch of frost and misty mornings and you can understand why this time of year is still a fantastic time to visit.

Our attractions continue throughout the year, many only closing their doors for the festive bank holidays, so you have plenty of opportunity to enjoy fabulous days out - you just need to wrap up warm!

Windermere Lake Cruises
Operating throughout the festive season (excluding Christmas Day only) you can enjoy the surrounding scenery of Lake Windermere from on the lake itself. Whether it's a short trip from Bowness up to Ambleside and back or the full trip from top to bottom, you can relax and take in the beautiful winter wonderland.

Mountain Goat Tours
Mountain Goat are the expert guides when it comes to the Lakes. If you’ve never been here before you can choose a tour to ensure you tick off the key places. If you’re a seasoned visitor to the area they can introduce you to the lesser known places of the National Park. All with expert commentary from their knowledgeable guides and with plenty of stops for food and photos.

Blackwell
Head to Blackwell to see the UK’s finest Arts & Crafts house in a perfect winter wonderland. With dazzling Christmas trees, an imaginative art exhibition, a local cultural experience and a perfectly crisp view overlooking Windermere and the Coniston Fells, Blackwell is the place to be inspired. They have a sleigh load of hand-crafted gifts in their Contemporary Craft Shop and lots of tasty treats in the cafe too.

Winter adventures
For adventure seekers we’re spoilt for choice with high rope activities from Treetop nets and Treetop trek based at Brockhole, Windermere, Go Ape at Grizedale Forest and Via Ferrata at Honister for those who want to take it to the extreme. Honister also has a 300 year old slate mine that you can tour or even climb - perfect for wet days. Most are available throughout the winter time on selected dates - see our attractions page for links to their individual sites.

Lakes Distillery
Within a short drive from Keswick and within 150 yards of the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, sits Lakes Distillery where you can really immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of the distillery itself. You may have done distillery tours before, but in how many can you taste whisky, gin and vodka at the end? Their shop has some fantastic Christmas tipples on offer too!

Windermere Jetty Museum
Head to the Lake District’s newest all-weather museum, a vibrant, family-friendly visitor attraction dedicated to the boats, people and rich history of Windermere; England’s largest natural lake.  For an unforgettable and unique Covid-safe experience, take to the lake aboard SL Osprey, a fully restored Edwardian steam launch. Cosy up with onboard blankets and immerse yourself in the landscape as their crew share fascinating stories about the region and this wonderful historic vessel.  When you’re finally back on dry land, visit the lakeshore café to enjoy the best view of the lake and to warm up with a delicious selection of teas, coffees and tasty homemade treats.

Gift vouchers
Not quite ready to come back yet? Make a promise to yourself or a loved one with a Christmas gift voucher that you can redeem in 2021. Our hotels and attractions offer a range of breaks and experiences from their individual websites that they can deliver via post or email for the big day.

Responsible Tourism
All of our attractions have their own safety procedures in place, so there’s no need to worry. Many will send you these within their individual confirmations when you book your tickets, if not they are all on their websites and can be easily accessed.
