May is a superb time to visit the Lake District. An early spring getaway means the chill of winter is a distant memory and summer is just around the corner. It’s also right before the busy tourist season, so everywhere is a little quieter than it might be in the summer months of July and August.
There are also a number of fantastic events planned in May, wherever you’re headed in the Lakes:
Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 May - Keswick Jazz Festival
Sunday 21 May: Brathay Windermere Marathon and Half Marathon
Friday 26 to Saturday 27 May: Ireby Festival
Sunday 28 to Tuesday 30 May: Festival of Fools
If you do find yourself in Keswick, Windermere, Ireby or Ravenglass for these events, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to hotels, restaurants and attractions in the surrounding areas.
If you’re heading to Windermere, you can rest your head in comfort at fabulous hotels including Linthwaite House, Cragwood, Merewood and Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, among others. Nearby attractions include Brockhole on Windermere and Treetop Trek, as well as the famous Beatrix Potter attraction and lots of great places to eat and drink.
If you’re venturing further up north towards Keswick, again, you’ll be spoilt for choice! Armathwaite Hall Country House Hotel and Spa is perfect if you’re looking to add a little luxury to your trip away. You’ll be kept busy in Keswick too, as there’s plenty to do, such as spending fun-filled days at Honister Slate Mine and Whinlatter Forest.
