It’s set to keep her name alive and what could be more perfect than to bring her genius music and lyrics back to life. Fourteen Again uses music and lyrics by Victoria herself, with the book by Tom MacRae, lyricist of the global hit Everybody's Talking About Jamie.
The theatre team say: “We are now proudly renamed The Victoria Wood Theatre. This new name pays tribute to the remarkable Victoria Wood - beloved writer, performer and comedian - whose wit, warmth and creative spirit have long been part of the fabric of our theatre's history. Victoria's enduring connection to our venue makes this renaming a fitting celebration of her extraordinary legacy.”
The run for the show has already been extended even though opening night isn’t until May, such has been the demand for tickets. And if you’re thinking about coming to stay, we have a brilliant range of hotels within walking distance of the theatre. Here’s a few for you to choose from; a couple of them are up a hill, but all are within a mile’s walk.
The Angel Inn sits in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere,just a short walk away from the theatre, as well as the shore of Windermere where you can spend the day. It’s an inviting, contemporary pub, with home cooked country dishes served all day every day, whether you are looking for family favourites, Cumbrian classics or a flavoursome modern twist.
Also very close to the centre of the village and the theatre is the Burn How Garden House Hotel, a family run haven set in a secret garden just minutes away from the centre, the lake and the theatre. There’s a choice of 28 ensuite rooms, some specially designed for disabled access, others with family needs in mind. The hotel layout ensures all rooms have their own parking area near to the rooms.
Two hotels that are up a hill but worth the walk. Lindeth Howe nestles on the hillside overlooking Windermere, and yet it’s only a mile from Bowness. The hotel was once owned by Beatrix Potter who enjoyed many holidays here, and it was here that she was inspired to write and illustrate two of her books, Timmy Tiptoes and Pigling Bland.
A bit higher up is Linthwaite House, set in well-maintained gardens and private woodland grounds, with a private tarn and its own summerhous. Here you will find top calss cuisine at Henrock, a new, informally elegant restaurant by Simon Rogan. True to the Rogan ethos, the focus lies on beautiful local ingredients, including produce from his own farm just a few miles away in the Cartmel Valley.
Closer to the centre, just minutes away from the theatre, is the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa, a 4-star hotel right on the shore of England's largest lake. You get breathtaking scenery and unrivalled views, exceptional facilities, and a spa to help you unwind completely.
Also close to the centre is The Ro, a new kind of hotel in the heart of the most popular tourist destination of the Lakes. It’s an all-day destination for tourists and locals, a place that you can go with friends for a coffee or lunch with the family after a trip to Beatrix Potter World. They say: “From the art on our walls, to the food we serve and the events we host – we champion the best the Cumbria has to offer.”
